Furry Family Members: Why Pets Belong in Your Family Photo Sessions

As a family lifestyle photographer, one thing I have noticed over the years is that when families include their furry friends to their photo sessions, the images tend to turn out even better!  That's why I always encourage my clients to include their dogs or cats in their family photography sessions, whether it's an outdoor shoot or an in-home session.

Here are some reasons why bringing your dog to your family photo session is a great idea:

1. Dogs + Cats are a part of the family.

When it comes to capturing memories, it only makes sense to include your furry friend in the photos. After all, they're just as much a part of your family's story as anyone else

2. Pets add an element of fun and spontaneity to the shoot.

Let's face it, dogs (and cats sometimes) have a way of making things more fun. When you bring your dog to your family photo session, it adds an element of playfulness that can really make the photos pop. Whether they are running around and chasing a ball, or simply sitting with the family and looking adorable, their presence can help make the photo shoot more enjoyable and relaxed.

3. Pets are great at making kids feel comfortable.

For kids who might be feeling a bit nervous or shy during the photo session, having their pet around can be a great way to put them at ease. Family pets have a way of making people feel comfortable and relaxed, and that can help kids (and you!) feel more comfortable and confident during the shoot.

And if you're thinking about an in-home photo session, here are some reasons why you should consider including your dog in the photos:

1. Your home is your dog or cat's territory.

Animals are creatures of habit, and they're often most comfortable in their own home. When you include your dog and cat in an in-home photo session, they're more likely to feel relaxed and at ease. This can allow your photographer to capture their best qualities in a family setting.

2. In-home sessions allow for more candid moments.

When you're in your own home, you're more likely to let your guard down and be yourself. This can lead to more candid and natural moments that make for great photos. And when you have your furry family friend with you, it can lead to even more spontaneous and fun moments.

3. Your cat + dog are a part of your home and family.

When you include your pets in an in-home photo session, you're capturing a piece of your family's story that is unique and special. Your home is your pet’s home too, and including them in the photos helps to capture that connection and bond.

I believe that including your furry friends in your family photography session is a great way to capture memories that you'll treasure for years to come. Whether it's an outdoor shoot or an in-home session, your furry friend can add an element of fun, spontaneity, and comfort that can help make the photos even better. So next time you're planning a family photo session, don't forget to bring your pet along!
